Vitamins are essential for our health and well-being. In fact, they play an important role in many aspects of the proper functioning of our body, and this is true of each of them. If vitamins A and C are the most well-known vitamins, vitamin K is one of the most important for our body. It is therefore important to know more about this.

An essential vitamin for blood clotting

Vitamins are organic compounds that people need in small amounts to stay healthy. When it comes to humans, most vitamins need to be obtained with food because the body does not produce them or produces very little of them. Vitamins are generally divided into two groups: water-soluble vitamins and fat-soluble vitamins. Water-soluble vitamins are those that the human body cannot store and that are excreted naturally in the urine.

For this reason, people need to be given these types of vitamins more regularly. These include vitamins C and B. Fat-soluble vitamins, on the other hand, accumulate in adipose tissue and the liver, and the supply of these vitamins in the body can persist for days and sometimes months. The vitamin K is part of this group. Although this vitamin is not as well known as vitamins A, C and D, it is no less important. In fact, vitamin K plays an essential role in blood clotting and thus in preventing bleeding.

Also, if this vitamin is so called, it is because vitamin KK means coagulation, the Danish word for clotting. The body needs vitamin K to make prothrombin, an important protein in blood clotting. This protein also plays an important role in bone metabolism and heart health. Vitamin K supplements do not need to be taken by a healthy and normal person because the diet provides enough to maintain good health.

Vitamin A is easily found in our diet

However, this is not always the case. The human body does not usually need a lot of vitamin K, but its deficiency can be dangerous. Anyway, vitamin K deficiency is quite rare, and especially occurs with the use of certain drugs that inhibit the growth of bacteria that synthesize this vitamin. Vitamin K deficiency can also be caused by specific diseases such as Crohn’s disease or strenuous diet. This deficiency is also more common in children. It is important to note that it is best to consult your doctor before taking a vitamin K supplement.

You should know that there are two types of vitamin K, vitamin K1 and vitamin K2. The main difference between these two types is their origin. Vitamin K1 is mainly obtained from vegetables leafy greens, and K2 is more present in fermented foods and some products of animal origin. Although vitamin K2 may be better absorbed by the body, K1 is more commonly used in medical vitamin K supplements.
