Is Vitamin Therapy Beneficial?

They look like medicines often sold in pharmacies, widely used in advertisements for their “back” virtues … Would it be tablets, powder sachets, effervescent tablets, what are they really worth?

Nutritionist Matthieu Marty has a clear opinion. According to him, “the first argument for these drugs is … marketing. The supplement market is huge. By proclaiming a very often non-existent interest, it plays on the ignorance of consumers. The public is led to believe that these products provide vitality or energy. However, it is not that simple. In fact, energy is provided by lipids, proteins and carbohydrates. Trace elements (vitamins, minerals, trace elements) play an essential role in various metabolic processes in the body: they are like factory workers. When there is a shortage of staff, it will affect various functions of the organization. »

What to do in case of fatigue?

According to the nutritionist, there is no need to answer marketing calls to relieve a fatigue stroke. “It is better to be attentive to the contents of the plate. If low vulnerability is felt, the consumption of raw organic fruits (kiwi, citrus fruits), organic vegetables (pepper, parsley, etc.) will have to be increased to get the most out of antioxidant vitamins (e.g. vitamins A, summer C). A good indicator to make sure you get the right accessories is to watch the eclecticism of the colors on the plate. In fact, each color in a food can be associated with a certain intake of vitamins and minerals: so the more colors on a plate, the more trace elements it contains. Let us also not forget that food and its trace elements will always be better absorbed than food supplements. »

Excessive risk of vitamins

According to Matthieu Marty, if people’s interest in supplements in a balanced diet is quite limited, they can lead to hypervitaminosis, an excess of vitamins. “It’s unproductive,” the nutritionist warns. “There is a physiological principle called ‘hormeze’. This means that the increase in a beneficial biological substance (e.g., trace elements) becomes negative when it exceeds a certain threshold. For example, iron is irreplaceable. But if taken too much, it will have a prooxidant effect, somehow rusting the cells. Therefore, this principle of hormones should be respected, do not take dietary supplements without the advice of a doctor, just follow the advertisements. »

Therefore, vitamin treatment would not suit anyone?

The nutritionist wants to be less categorical on this issue. In fact, a vitamin supplement can be beneficial for those with a known deficiency. For example, vitamin C deficiency is associated with scurvy. However, this is very rare.

“It is impossible for an ordinary person to be diagnosed with a true deficiency,” continues Matthieu Marty. “If there is a recurrence of infections, severe fatigue or skin disorders or scarring, the condition of the vitamins can be assessed in consultation with a nutritionist specializing in micronutrients or a doctor’s nutritionist. But in addition, you will realize that if you are in good health, it is much more important and beneficial to diversify and improve your diet. »
